Beating the Workplace Moody Blues

For employers, improving workers’ mood is about more than just keeping the peace at the office.

A bad mood can not only cause excessive conflict among employees, but on an individual level it can have physical effects such as high blood pressure.

Mood may be linked to depression, anxiety, lost sleep, and increased stress levels, which come with their own health issues.

In the workplace, mood affects job performance. Happy employees are more engaged and productive and are likely to cause fewer ripples in the peaceful waters of your office environment.

So what’s the solution? You have only so much influence over your staff members’ mood, and not a bit over their ingrained personality traits (some people simply tend toward negativity).

But suggesting some simple mood boosters might be helpful to the staff at large, particularly those at whom you’re aiming the message.

For instance, a study completed last year proved that nature has positive effects on mood and self-esteem, and that just five minutes spent outdoors can make a difference. The longer people spend exercising in a natural setting, the more mood benefits they reap from their efforts.

We can’t all move our offices outside, but we can encourage workers to find a few minutes in even their busiest day to take a walk or spend a portion of their lunch break beyond the confines of the office.

Here are a few additional mood boosters:

  • Get a laptop. Spending some time doing work near nature can work wonders for mood.
  • Exercise. Grab a friend or coworker and walk, walk, walk. It gives people a chance to talk, release some of the day’s frustrations, and get in some physical activity at the same time.
  • Learn and practice relaxation techniques such as yoga, deep breathing exercises, or meditation, which can be done right at your desk.
  • Bring the outside in. A few potted plants or fresh flowers can liven up an office or cubicle and serve as instant mood boosters.
  • Sleep well. Getting sufficient sleep can make a huge difference in the way you feel the next day.
